Forward to backward turn

What you need to do :

You would have noticed that it is very difficult to turn your body while doing a forward rotation unless you inch your body round while trying your best to keep the poi parallel to each other. Not glamorous at all. My suggestion is to learn this simple turn, it will come in useful when you want to start doing turns with your butterfly moves and even butterfly combinations.

Determine the direction you would like to turn. Stick to it. In this video, I am doing a right turn and all my instructions will be based on this. Again, as with all other moves, start with one poi at a time. The dynamics for both hands are different depending on the direction you decide to turn.

Watch the video closely. Notice at the time of the turn, the elbows start to stick out and the poi start to go under the arm. It is at the lowest trajectory of the poi when it starts to go under your arm that you start to turn your body around, allowing the poi to complete one circular motion behind your back while turning and ending up in the backward motion after you have completed your turn.

Basically 3 motions:

1.  Elbows stick out, poi start to go under your arms at the lowest trajectory. You start turning.

2.  Complete the circular motion behind your back, under your arms. You continue turning.

3.  End up in the opposite direction from when you started. Make sure you are doing the backward rotation now.

All of this should be done in one flowing motion so that you will not bump your head or get tangled up in the process. My rule of thumb is, your speed of turn should follow the speed of the spin of your poi.

The beauty of the turn is, if you have noticed, the poi continues to spin in its same original direction. It is the spinner and his/her hands that have switched directions. Point to note, do it very slowly at the beginning, the tendency to knock your head with this move if done clumsily is very high. =)
