| What you need to do :
The reason
this move is called the butterfly is because, if done right, these two poi
will resemble the wings of a butterfly flapping up and down, as shown in
the first video.
You will
need to notice a few things, which are shown clearly in the second video. The
first point is that both poi are moving in opposite directions, i.e. one
clockwise and the other anti-clockwise. This is achieved by first starting
with both poi in forward rotation and bringing your hands in together.
The next
point to note is that when both hands are close to each other, one hand is
slightly above the other and on closer observation, you will notice that
the lower hand’s poi cuts on its downward swing a fraction earlier than the
hand that is higher. This is how you achieve the illusion of bringing both poi
down at the same time without tangling them ;-)
Now that
you are visually prepared to do the butterfly, might I suggest you take your
time to get the basics right when u are doing this. Spend a little time
practicing each hand and making sure you have no issues spinning the poi in
front of your body without it swinging all over the place.
Secondly,
especially for the guys, avoid getting over-enthusiastic and doing this move
very fast until you are very, very familiar with the move. The moment the poi
gets tangled, it will go straight for your crown jewels… don’t ask me
why but they tend to do that.
Enjoy
practicing the butterfly!
